When to Replace Your Old Ventilation Ducting — and Why It Matters for Your Home

August 10, 2026 / Super Cell / 0 comments

How to Tell If Your Ventilation Ducting Needs Replacing

Ventilation ducting doesn't last forever. Over time, the flexible plastic and foil materials used in most home ventilation systems degrade — and when they do, they can cause more harm than good. Knowing what to look for could save you from poor air quality, mould problems, and costly repairs down the track.

It's Lost Its Shine — Time to Inspect

One of the earliest warning signs is the ducting losing its sheen. Fresh flexible ducting has a smooth, slightly reflective surface. When it starts to look dull, chalky, or brittle, the material is breaking down. At this stage, the ducting becomes prone to cracking and tearing — especially when flexed or disturbed during maintenance. If you can see it's lost its shine, don't wait: a visual inspection of the full run is overdue.

Check for Rodent Damage

Roof spaces and subfloors are prime territory for rodents, and flexible ducting is an easy target. Rats and mice will chew through ducting to nest inside or simply because it's in their way. Even small punctures or tears cause significant air leakage, reducing system efficiency and allowing unfiltered air — and whatever is in your ceiling space — to enter your home. When inspecting your ducting, look carefully for:

  • Bite marks or gnaw holes
  • Torn or collapsed sections
  • Droppings near or inside duct runs
  • Nesting material pushed into ducts

If you find rodent damage, replace the affected sections immediately and address the pest issue before reinstating the system.

Idle Systems Are a Moisture Risk

If your ventilation system has been sitting idle for an extended period — whether due to a fault, a vacant property, or simply being switched off — moisture can accumulate inside the ducting. Without airflow to dry things out, condensation builds up, creating the perfect environment for mould to grow inside the duct walls and lining.

Mould inside ducting is a serious problem. Once established, it's very difficult to fully remove, and running the system will blow mould spores directly into your living spaces — exactly the opposite of what a ventilation system should do.

If your system has been idle for months or longer, have the ducting inspected before switching it back on. In many cases, replacement is the safer and more cost-effective option.

Replacing Fan Motors? Renew Your Ducting at the Same Time

If you're having a fan motor replaced or serviced, this is the ideal time to assess and replace your ducting too. Here's why: a new motor pushing air through old, degraded, or mould-affected ducting will simply distribute the problem more efficiently. You'll be circulating stale, potentially mould-contaminated air through your home at a higher rate.

Renewing your ducting at the same time as your motor replacement means:

  • Clean, fresh airflow from day one
  • No mould spores being blown into living areas
  • Better system efficiency with matched components
  • One visit, one job — saving time and labour costs

It's a small additional investment that makes a significant difference to the air quality in your home.
